Nice idea. lighting is a bit harsh here though.. Did u shoot it on table top. If you are intrested check this link out to construct a lightbox at home. I made one for me on similar lines and took some images, this is one of those. Its worth finally. :)

I agree with Srini that light could be toned down a bit - shining your light through a semi-tranparent surface or bouncing it off a reflective surface onto the subject may also diffuse it some.

Wow I like the colors and the choice of a red background! Someday I will also take a similar picture with colored pencils. :)
However like the other guys said the light is a bit too bright. It makes the brown wood of the pencils look paler than they naturally would.

Very nice too. Different point of view then mine but same pen orientation... ...funny !
I think the major difference is the lightning and the macro lens I used.
No image is comparable. Yours is special too !
